Baku City Break

Baku is a city of contrasts that few travelers outside the region have fully discovered — which makes it one of the most rewarding city breaks from the UAE right now. The old walled city of Icherisheher (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) stands intact from the 12th century, with narrow lanes leading past the Maiden Tower and Shirvanshah Palace. Four minutes' walk away, the Flame Towers — three skyscrapers clad in 10,000 LED panels — light up the night sky with fire animations visible from 30km out.

Azerbaijan sits on the Caspian Sea, which gives Baku a genuine waterfront: the 3.5km Baku Boulevard promenade stretches south from the old city through parks, cafés, and the National Flag Square. The city is exceptionally safe, very walkable, and English-speaking to a degree unusual for the region.

This four-night break covers the city's main sights without rushing, with time built in for the Absheron Peninsula (mud volcanoes and a Zoroastrian fire temple that has burned continuously since the 7th century) and the Nizami Street shopping corridor that local families use on weekend evenings. Baku is one of the easiest, most surprising cities you can reach in under two hours from Dubai.
